Radical students brutally killed three persons including mentally and physically challenged at Dhaka,Jahangirnagar and Rajshahi University in the last twelve days in Bangladesh.
The mentally challenged man, on suspicion of being a thief, was lynched by the radical students of Dhaka University on Wednesday night.
The incident took place at the Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall.
The deceased, identified as Tofazzal from Barguna district, was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead.
At one point, he was even fed at the university canteen before being assaulted again by the fanatic students. His condition worsened after prolonged interrogation, and he was taken to the hospital around midnight, where he was pronounced dead.
After the incident went viral on social media, it was later revealed that Tofazzal had mental health conditions.
Shamim Ahmed, a former organizing secretary of the Chhatra League’s Jahangirnagar University unit, has been mercilessly beaten to death allegedly by a zealot group of students.
Shamim was a former student of the university’s 39th batch in the Department of History, who was subjected to a beating on Wednesday and was declared dead hours later after being taken to the hospital.
Ashulia police station Office-in-Charge Md Kamal Hossain confirmed the death.
The incident was captured on video and footage of the attack on Shamim began circulating on social media later on Wednesday evening.
Police subsequently took Shamim into custody and admitted him to the Gonoshasthaya Samaj Vittik Medical College in Savar.
Witnesses said Shamim, who lived near the university, was first beaten up by a group of extremist students at the Prantik Gate of the campus in the evening.
Security guards from the university later rescued him and took him to the university’s security section.
But groups of the dogmatist students then beat him again in the presence of security guards and Proctor AKM Rashidul Alam, witnesses said.
Sudipto Shaheen, the head of the university’s security department, said that after receiving the news in the afternoon, security officers went to the scene.
He added that they had rescued Shamim and brought him to the proctor’s office.
Later, they handed him over to the proctor, who then handed him to Ashulia police.
Dr Selimuzzaman Sujan, an on-duty doctor at Gonoshasthaya Samaj Vittik Medical College Hospital in Savar, said when Shamim was brought to the hospital at night, doctors examined him and found that he had already passed away.
“Essentially, he had died before arriving.”
Meanwhile, at around 1:30am on Thursday, some students held a protest against the extrajudicial killing, demanding justice and punishment for those responsible.
On September 07 night, one Abdullah Al Masud, 35, who lost his right leg in an attack reportedly carried out by Islami Chhatra Shibir students in 2014 and used a prosthetic leg to move on, came under the attack, hours after he shared a post on his Facebook wall wishing prayers for him and his four-day old daughter.
Around 150 locals and extremist students detained Masud in the Binodpur area, adjacent to Rajshahi University, and beat him up mercilessly and succumbed to his injuries later while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Masud was a former assistant secretary of BCL Rajshahi University unit, said police.
