At least two people died in an outbreak of diarrhoea at remote Sajek area under Bhagaichari upazila of Rangamati district on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Gobtibala Tripura, 60 and Singho Tripura alias Darung, 65 of remote Longtian Para, said Joipoye Thang Tripura, a local representative of the area.
“Around 65 were afflicted with diarrhoea in remote paras of Rangamati’s Sajek union”, said Joipoye Thang, a ward member of Sajek union.
“In 2016, six people died of diarrhoea in the area. If urgent measures are not taken, the number of patients and deaths may increase”, he said.
Baghaichhari Upazila Health and family planning officer Dr Arabinda Chakma said, “We learnt that among the two deceased in remote Longtian para one died of diarrhoea while another one died of old-age complications.”
“A medical team of four members has already left for Sajek with necessary medicines, saline and water purification tablets. It will take one day to reach the affected areas. Details will be known after the team will reach there”, he said.
