An elephant calf shot dead in a reserve forest area of Cox’s Bazar on Sunday.
“The calf aged around nine years was shot in the head”, said Anwar Hossain Sarkar, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Cox’s Bazar North.
“We rushed to the spot following the information and recovered the injured body of the elephant calf from a reserve forest area under Kutakhali Mouza of the district”, said the DFO.
The calf which was under treatment later died, said the forest official.
One Md Idris, 55 who grabbed the reserve forest land area killed the calf, said the DFO.
“Case filling against the criminal who killed the animal is under process”, he added.
Locals said wild elephants have become endangered due to recent deforestation and forest encroachment in Cox’s Bazar.
Seeking anonymity a forest official told around twenty elephants found dead in Cox’s Bazar in the last two years.
