An indigenous woman, abandoned by her husband, was raped allegedly by a settler in Bandarban’s Lama upazilla on Friday noon.
The 24-year-old victim was from Hargaja Latui Marma Para said police.
One Md Kaisar, 36, of Hargaja Futer Jiri forcefully picked up the victim when she went to pluck vegetables from the land next to her house to jungle said victim’s uncle.
Locals rescued the victim and caught Kaisar red-handed while chairman of the area sent the rapist to Cox’s Bazar’s Chakaria in the name of treatment, he said.
“Case filling is under process while we are trying to arrest the alleged rapist”, said Shahidul Islam Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Lama police station.
Family members said the seriously injured woman was admitted to the upazila health complex the day after the rape.
The victim was shifted to One-stop Crisis Centre (OCC) at Bandarban Sadar Hospital, said police.
Indignation has been created among the indigenous community over the incident.
Locals said, the victim has been feeling very insecure as the family is very poor and helpless. They demanded arrest and exemplary punishment of the rapist.
