A teenage girl from an indigenous community of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) was reportedly gang-raped while returning from a private tutoring session on Tuesday night, according to her family.
She was found unconscious in a crop field around 11 p.m., two hours after leaving her tutoring centre. She is currently receiving treatment at Khagrachhari District Hospital.
Her father filed a complaint at Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station early Wednesday, naming three unidentified individuals as suspects.
Police confirmed that one suspect has been arrested, while efforts continue to apprehend the others.
Officer-in-Charge Md. Abdul Baten said, “The investigation is ongoing, and we are working to ensure all involved are brought to justice.”
The case prompted immediate public outrage. The indigenous student organisation ‘Jummo Chhatra–Janata’ held a protest march and assembly at Shapla Chottor in the district town on Wednesday morning, demanding the arrest of the perpetrators within 24 hours.
“She followed a regular routine, attending evening tuition and returning home by 9 p.m. When she did not come home, we visited the tutor’s residence and learned the session had been cancelled. We then mobilised local residents to search the surrounding area and found her unconscious in a field,” the victim’s father lamented.
Local leaders and activists stressed that the incident highlights persistent vulnerabilities for women, particularly in indigenous communities.
They called for swift and transparent legal action to ensure accountability and prevent further violence.
The police have launched a formal investigation, and authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information that may assist in apprehending the remaining suspects.
