In a violent incident in Khagrachhari, three members of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) were shot dead by armed assailants from the alleged Army-backed Nabyomukush Bahini.
The attack occurred in Shanti Ranjan Para, located in Latiban Union under Panchhari Upazila of the district.
The victims have been identified as Sijon Chakma, Shason Tripura, and Jayen Chakma, as reported by the UPDF in a press release.
The organization stated that the attack took place at around 10 am. when members of the Nabyomukush Bahini opened fire on the activists, killing them instantly.
Jashim Uddin, officer-in-charge of the Panchhari Police Station, confirmed that police have recovered the bodies and are conducting an investigation into the incident.
In reaction to the killings, the UPDF has declared a dawn-to-dusk hartal (strike) for Thursday in the district.
The organization has called for the arrest and punishment of those responsible for the attack.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the UPDF highlighted that similar attackers killed four individuals, including Bipul Chakma, in Pujgang last year, and criticized the government for its inaction in bringing those perpetrators to justice.
This latest incident exacerbates fears for the safety of political dissenters in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), an area already marked by high tensions and ongoing violence.
The UPDF’s call for the strike underscores the growing frustration with governmental inaction and the escalating threats faced by those advocating for political change.
Local observers warn that unless the authorities take decisive action, such violent incidents may continue to rise, further destabilizing the region and endangering the lives of activists.
