Four activists, including Bipul Chakma, organising secretary of Democratic Youth Forum and former president of Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP), were brutally killed by the state-sponsored Motaleb Bahini (Nabyomukosh) in Khagrachari’s Panchari on Monday night alleged United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF).
Describing the incident UPDF said in a statement that, Bipul, 32, along with Sunil Tripura,28, central vice-president of PCP, Liton Chakma,29, vice-president of Democratic Youth Forum Khagrachari distrit unit , Rahin Bikas Tripura, 49, Niti Dutta Chakma and Harikamal Tripura, organisers of UPDF went to Logang area to organise a conference for youths in the area which was supposed to be held today (Tuesday).
They were staying in a house of remote Anil Para while the armed members of Motaleb Bahini (Nabyomukosh) went to the house at around 10 pm and brutally killed Bipul Chakma, Sunil Tripura, Liton Chakma and Ruhin Bikas Tripura on the spot said the statement.
Later, the criminals abducted Niti Dutta Chakma, Harikamal Tripura and Prakash Tripura from the spot.
The government and the military administration deployed in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) cannot avoid the responsibility of the brutal killing while the leaders of the UPDF demands immediate arrest of the killers, and exemplary punishment, the statement also reads.
In 2017, Abdul Motaleb Sajjad Mahmud, former Brigade Commander of the Khagrachari Army Brigade, created the Nabyomukhosh Bahini claimed UPDF in their statement.
However, Shyamal Kanti Chakma, president of UPDF (democratic) denied their involvement in the “shootout” and termed it propaganda against them. “No one from our party involved while we are not an armed group.”
Contacted, Khagrachhari’s superintendent of police (SP) Mukta Dhara said, they will investigate the incident and would brief it later.
After the news broke, many in social media termed the murder as extrajudicial killings in hills.
“The way comrades of Pahari Chhatra Parishad and UPDF are being killed one after another is a kind of extrajudicial killing. Instead of Army or RAB directly these killings are being done continuously by hired killers in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). It’s kind of like a made-up story of RAB gun fight. However, the name of the Bangladesh Army is not involved in this, it is being run as a conflict between the two groups”, said a Facebook post.
“Earlier, in 2016 Bipul Chakma was arrested while he was taking his cancer- afflicted mother to hospital. Later the distraught mother died. The police brought Bipul in his mother’s last rites in a shackled condition known as danda-beri. Finally Bipul was also killed. All deaths are not equal. Revolutionary deaths are as heavy as mountains.”, said another Facebook post.
