In a brutal act of violence, a third-gender individual was murdered in Betbunia, Kaukhali Upazila, Rangamati, on the evening of Monday, February 3.

Police found Shila’s lifeless body at her home in Betbunia Union, her throat brutally slashed and decapitated, confirming she was killed in what seems to be a targeted attack.

The heinous killing, believed to have been carried out by militants, has sparked outrage and heightened fears for the safety of marginalized communities in the region.

Shila, originally from Hathazari in Chattogram, had been a vocal and tireless supporter of the transgender community for years.

She was widely recognized for her humanitarian work and unwavering commitment to social justice.

Her untimely and violent death has left the community in shock and raised alarming questions about the safety of transgender individuals in the country.

According to local sources, five unidentified individuals were seen entering Shila’s home late on Sunday night.

When attempts to contact her the following day went unreturned, a fellow transgender individual informed neighbors.

Upon entering the house, they found Shila’s lifeless body, her throat violently slit and additional wounds to her abdomen.

Kaukhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Saiful Islam Sohag condemned the crime, calling it an act of extreme violence.

“This is a brutal and premeditated attack. We have gathered important evidence from the crime scene and are actively pursuing all leads. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination,” he confirmed.

The murder has sparked intense condemnation from all corners. Shila is remembered not only as a leader but as a symbol of resilience, compassion, and justice.

“Shila was a beacon of hope and a fierce defender of human rights. Her murder is an unconscionable act, and it is crucial that those responsible are held accountable,” said Nayan, a local of the area.

The demand for justice has resonated strongly within the community and beyond.

“This crime cannot go unpunished. The perpetrators must be brought to justice swiftly and face the full extent of the law. Anything less would be a failure of justice,” declared another resident.

Shila’s murder highlights the vulnerabilities faced by transgender individuals in Bangladesh, a country where their rights are often disregarded or suppressed.
