CHT Desk:
A 16-year-old indigenous Chakma girl has been found dead inside a house in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar district, with her family alleging she was murdered after rape.
Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination as an investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The deceased, Maya Chakma, daughter of Kaiching Chakma and Raschingma Chakma, was from Telkhola village under Palongkhali Union in Ukhiya upazila.
She had been working as a domestic helper for around a year at a residence in Sridhan Para area of Fatekharkul union in Ramu, owned by Sadhan Barua.
Family members said Maya had been in regular contact with her father and appeared in normal health in the days before her death.
They said she was expected to return home around the Bengali New Year, after being told she would be sent back by her employer.
According to relatives, the family received a phone call on Sunday afternoon asking them to come to the house immediately.
When they arrived later in the evening, they found her body covered with a white sheet inside the residence.
They said they were initially told that she had died by suicide, a claim they rejected, saying there were no visible signs consistent with hanging or self-inflicted death.
The family has alleged that Maya was murdered after rape and is demanding a full, independent investigation.
“There are too many unanswered questions. We want justice and a proper investigation,” a family member said.
Local sources have also made unverified claims suggesting possible involvement of individuals connected to the household, including a son who had recently returned from abroad.
Police confirmed that the body was sent to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Ramu Police Station Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam Bhuiyan said legal procedures were underway. “The exact cause of death will be known after the post-mortem report,” he said.
No arrests have been made so far.
Police say they are investigating all possible angles as the case draws local attention and the family continues to demand accountability.
